Is colonoscopy a painful procedure?

This is another common question I am often asked in the office. Colonoscopy should NOT be painful. If it is painful, your doctor and nurse should be made aware as soon as possible. Remember, most doctor’s offices have after hours and weekend phone systems to report any concerns.

What can I expect?

Following the procedure, you can expect mild abdominal bloating, or a slight gassy feeling. You might feel this in any location across your abdomen (below the ribs). Bloating can last for several minutes and goes away by the time you’re dressed and ready to go home from the endoscopy unit.
